Question and Wonder:

  • How many different ways can your body move?
  • What senses are you using when you spin? Roll? Tumble?
  • Can you spin like a top? Roll like a ball? Rock like a rocking chair?
  • What about tumbling? How do you do that?
  • What other moving things can you imitate with your body movement?
  • Can you swing without a swing? How?

Making sure you have plenty of room, spin, roll tumble, swing, move your body. Grab a family member or friend and see what movements you can make together.

Imagine and Design:

  • Imagine you are a rocking horse. How will you move?
  • When you spin, how does it feel? Why?
  • What’s the best way to roll? On your side? Curled in a ball?
  • What shapes can you make in the air twirling and spinning with a ribbon or streamer?
  • What is the best way to somersault? Stand on your head?

Test and Discuss:

  • What are your favorite ways to move?
  • How did you feel when you spin really fast? Why?
  • Why is it easier to roll down a hill?
  • What do you notice about how you feel when you move?

Did You Know:

Children need the dizzying input that comes from spinning, rolling, and swinging. These important movement experiences help the child’s nervous system to mature and organize. Many adults eventually start to dislike the feeling of spinning or repetitive swinging, but for children, it is a crucial sensory and motor skill input.
