Question and Wonder:

  • Why do you think people start the new year making resolutions of things to change or improve?
  • What things around you need changing or problems  you see that need solutions?
  • How would you go about changing those things or finding the solutions?

Make a list of the things you would change or the problems you want to solve. Pick one.

Imagine and Design:

  • Brainstorm solutions. Write down everything no matter how silly. Be creative. Think outside the box.
  • How do you think your solutions will work? Evaluate them.
  • What are the ones that have the biggest chance of success?
  • Which ones can you eliminate right away?

Now that you have narrowed down your solutions. Try them out!

Test and Discuss:

  • What are some ways to test your ideas? How about creating a model? This could be a drawing, a graph, or a discussion to show how your idea would work.
  • Does your idea work? What are your next steps?
  • If it doesn’t work, what do you try next? Don’t give up!
  • What could you change to make it work?

Did You Know?

Allowing your children to brainstorm and find solutions to problems helps them become confident, independent, and successful individuals. Instead of giving up or getting frustrated when they encounter a challenge, kids with problem-solving skills manage their emotions, think creatively, and persist until they find a solution.
